Congratulations to those competitors!!! They found incredible compositions, to pass 60 moves is astounding. And the first found a 64 moves! This problem could in a way "represent" chess. 64 being the number of squares of the board, and the problem reaches the simplest of the simplest of chess positions!

Beautiful one. Notice the basic setup of double knight + bishop + rook. This turned out to be of most importance for this competition. Notice the ending with the rook taking the knight and how the king arrives at its destination!

Also a beautiful one. Notice the same basic setup as the previous one, and the fantastic idea of a knight at f7! And how the promoted knight comes to the rescue at the end, fantastic.

Very nice composition! And the first one sent by Ivan! The finish is also quite interesting, with the rook promotion.

Category B

Again congratulations to them!!! category B is a little bit different than A, as no promoted pieces can appear in the original position. And the two previous winners are reversed in this category! Those two (three) marked the competition all along, thus the final result can be seen as quite fair!

Guy Sobrecases

Great composition, with just 15 pieces!!! It is quite incredible. This means there is hope for more! Although finding a better one seems very tough to say the least.

Ivan Skoba & Vladimir Janal

Another great one! Notice the subtle difference in the final idea between this one and the previous one. In this it is the king who plays last, in the previous it was a pawn! This subtle ideas gives great freedom to the competitors in composing.

Ralf Krätschmer

A beautiful painting. This is quite original and does not use the strong setup (double knight + bishop + rook). Ralf was also the first to find this idea of knight at c7 and then pawn promoting to a rook.

I am very happy and honored to award the following prizes to those compositions and compositors. The truth is that there are many more that could be awarded, but unfortunately I cannot award all compositions. Thus I had to chose a variety of problems from different original ideas, that somehow marked me in one way or another.

Jean-Christian Galli - A/17/56/7

An absolutely incredible composition and idea! And the only one featuring a black promoted piece (through (although most basic) retrograde analysis)! Also it is the best without a black pawn promoting during the solution!

Ivan Skoba & Vladimir Janal - S/8/43

Very original and nice composition!

Ralf Krätschmer - B/16/53

Beautiful idea and quite original!

Vlaicu Crisan - S/12/35

This is a relatively "simple" setup, but with a very nice geometrical and beauty feeling to it. The idea was previously seen in the first series tournament, a composition by Christian Roset. And it was one of the first sent problems!

Guy Sobrecases - C/13/51

Very nice and economical composition. This was the first problem sent by Guy featuring the famous double knight + bishop + rook setup. This proved capital for the rest of the competition, as from then on he was on the rise!

Vladimir Janal, Ralf Krätschmer - C/7/32

A beautiful composition with just 7 pieces, just perfect. This turned out to be a capital setup for the tournament. Whoever would have found that one soon would have gained a substantial advantage. This mirrors somewhat the C/8/32 of the first series tournament, by Ralf Krätschmer, Pascal Wassong, Axel Gilbert and me.

A very surprising and nice composition, which gave many headaches to many compositors trying to find it, after Jean-Marie found it first!

Take 10 pieces, then reverse them. They will have the same number of heads as the other 90 pieces! For example: if they have 3 heads and 7 tails, reversing them will give 7 heads and 3 tails, as there were 10 heads to start with, the 90 pieces will also have 7 heads.

Assume that black wins all the time, then if white plays knight somewhere then returns to the same square, we get the same position but it is now white to move second, thus he must win. This is a contradiction, thus white has at least a strategy to make a draw.

Light the two ends of one rope, and one end of the second rope, when the first rope has burned totally, 30 minutes have passed. Then light the second end of the second rope, when it has burned, 15 more minutes have passed.
