A few final words...
Well, that has been quite a journey. A really nice one I must say. A thousand thanks to all the participants, you have been fantastic. It has been a real pleasure to know you, some for the very first time.
A big thank you also to Thomas Maeder for the (rapid and well done) work on Popeye during the tournament.
Also a big thank you to Nicolas Dupont for the idea of publishing the results in the Diagrammes magazine, giving it thus some "official" status. And also for the original idea of his tournament, of which this one is inspired.
Congratulations to all the participants for some real gem matrices, even those that are not in the top have found some fantastic ideas. Practically everyone found some original idea! And of course congratulations to the four winners: Ivan Skoba, Alexandre Leroux, Arno Tüngler and Cornel Pacurar! They have really "worked" very hard, and are rewarded as such with great matrices.
And Ivan Skoba must receive a special recognition, he is the only one to have crossed the 100 mark! Actually, he got to 118, with a splendid matrix! That is extraordinary...
And also Alexandre Leroux, he is the first one to have passed my two pre-tournament records challenge, just 1 week after the start of the competition! And they were not that easy to pass... quite an achievement!
The idea of this tournament turned out quite rich, even much richer than I first thought of. Luckily I did not exclude last move checks as I originally intended to. This would have taken a large amount of creativity out of this tournament. Last move checks proved a capital idea as you will soon discover!
I am quite sure some competitors passed nights on end on this competition, a constant struggle and frustrations, which was surely rewarded in the end. Personally, like many, I love challenges, the tougher they are, the more interesting for me. These kind of tournaments surely push some competitors to the edge, enabling them to feel the immense joy of success, at the end of a long struggle. That is what motivates me most. It is an incredibly complex logic problem to solve, that it is chess related is not the important point. Chess is a great framework, but there are many other possible ones as well.
Now I will let you enjoy the following beautiful matrices by the competitors. There could be errors in it, given the amount of material and the number of emails I received and treated (587 emails). Actually let me rephrase this: there are surely errors in it... :-) Please let me know if you find one.

What can I say... look closely at all the ideas, for example the king cannot take the knight at b5 after taking the bishop at a4 because then he would be trapped! Thus he must first take the rook at d5. Also look closely how the white bishop helps the king to pass all the black pieces, like an umbrella. 25 bishop moves! And the great idea of putting the queen at d8, thus only when the king is at g7, it should be taken! It is the only problem to have passed the 100 mark... |

The bishop at d5 is really the key, holding everything together. The king must take it, but the bishop at b1 prevents it. Thus follows a nice king circuit. |

It ressembles in some ways Ivan's. It was the first one I saw that exploited this idea of the "protecting" bishop so well. Even more bishop moves than Ivan's, 34!!! |

It is a nice matrix, with the bishop at d1 and knight at h5 playing a really important part. |

Four big king tours, and a beautiful and original finish with the king taking g5, goes to h6, leaving the bishop at e7 to take directly the pawn at h4, and so on until a7... very nice... |

Analyze this one carefully... the idea that the knight at e5 cannot be taken before the pawn at b5 is absolutely magnificent! Because then the white king is trapped in the middle of the board, even though it is not directly apparent. The bishop / king synergy is no less spectacular. |
